IBM puts Rational's ALM into the cloud said

IBM
has rolled out new capabilities from its Rational tool suite for
developing applications in both public and private cloud environments
IBM Rational
Software Delivery Services for Cloud Computing, released today, includes
application life-cycle management software for developing and testing in the
IBM Cloud. IBM executives said these new services can help organizations reduce
the time it takes to provision a test environment.
In talking about the benefits of developing and
deploying on the cloud from IBM’s perspective, Ashok Reddy, director of
software delivery platform and security for IBM Rational, said a big pain point
developers have today is the time and effort it takes to deploy development or
testing software. For example, a developer or development team has to install
and configure software and middleware, which could take weeks. In contrast,
with IBM’s new services, a developer can provision a development environment by
choosing images from a catalog, which can be done in minutes, he said.
“Most development teams today have quite a bit of their
infrastructure tied up for building and test purposes,” Reddy said. “Here, we
have a standardized way of making build and test pieces available to them, and
if they need to make a change, they can do that in a very short period.”
Also new from IBM is IBM Smart Business Development and
Test on the IBM Cloud, a free public cloud beta that provides cloud storage and
application deployment services. Reddy said IBM is offering a private cloud
implementation of Rational’s development products.
“We can actually go and implement a private cloud for a
customer, and when they use rational tools, it’s a fully integrated offering
where, if they want to build or test, they can leverage the public cloud
infrastructure,” Reddy said. “That way, they don’t have to buy and maintain all
the capital expenses for what’s needed for build and test. They can make sure
they store the information locally, but are able to expand to a public cloud.”
Reddy said IBM has a lot of experience in running data
centers and forming service-level agreements with companies to provide data
center services, so the company is leveraging that experience to properly
manage client data. Additionally, IBM’s cloud infrastructure allows for
third-party software and services, Reddy claimed.
From a testing perspective, developers and testers
don’t have to wait for an IT professional to set up a test of IBM Smart
Business Development and Test on the IBM Cloud, according to Reddy. “IBM is
providing a set of images that can be preconfigured for IBM middleware,” he
said. “So the customers can simulate their application pre-production, test it
and then actually deploy it.”
Synergetics India : According
to Gartner, the landscape for IT professionals will radically change by 2010 as
a result of four major global forces viz. Global Sourcing, IT Automation, Wide
use of Personal/Mobile Devices, and Business Restructuring. IT professionals will need to decide, whether to remain
in the realm of ‘pure technology’, a “Specialist”, or develop expertise and
practical experiences in industries, market segments and core business
processes that would help them adapt to the changing ecosystem, a
“Versatilist”.
